Now that you know what I'm up against, you understand the need for the sanitation! But, who wants the feeling of dry nasty hands after using hand sanitizer...NOT ME! As I was working with a teacher last week I noticed that she had a lotion that was a 2-in-1. It was hand sanitizer AND LOTION! It literally blew my mind. So I started thinking..rather than buying yet ANOTHER thing of lotion (because the amount of lotion I own would lead you to believe I have sister wives), why not try to make it myself?

Rubbing Alcohol
An Empty Container
As you apply the lotion you smell alcohol, but alcohol is fast evaporating and once it has evaporated it leaves no scent, so what you are left with is the original scent of your lotion. This statement is husband approved. I made him smell my hands to check for alcohol scent. :)
Now I am armed with something that will both sanitize my hands and keep them moisturized. And Ya'll I'm not playing...elementary school is NASTY. I'm convinced it's the original breeding ground for every disease there ever was.
So please, go forth make your own hand sanitizing lotion and be happy.

ReplyDeleteNo that wouldn't work, since hand sanitizer is already diluted down to the recommended 60% alcohol. Adding it to the cream would render it ineffective as a hand sanitizer.
DeleteI found rubbing alcohol at 90%, my store ran out of hand sanitizer. What if I changed the ratio of rubbing alcohol:lotion as, 2tsp:1TBP, you think that would be less diluted? I'm terrible at chemistry.

ReplyDeleteI was looking for information on whether you could mix hand sanitizer and lotion to make an all-in-one product and this popped up. Since most of us don't know how many tablespoons of lotion are in a container it looks like the ratio is 1 to 3. There are three teaspoons in a tablespoon so if you measured out a cup of lotion then you would add a third cup of alcohol to create the sanitizing effect. That sounds like a pretty good amount. Like the other poster, I was wondering if ready-made hand sanitizer woodwork since it is already a gel texture. I guess the only way to find out is to try it.

DeleteYes...you are correct. Two parts of Alcohol (at least 60%) to one part of anything else. Any less alcohol will NOT be effective as a sanitizer.

ReplyDeleteI made some today with Aloe lotion. I used 2/3 cup alcohol and 1/3 cup lotion. It it not going to be thick like the gel stuff, but still works good.
DeleteI made some in a small spray bottle using 2/3 alcohol and 1/3 alcohol plus a few drops of essential oil. I carry it with me when I go out. Because it's not thick it works great in the spray bottlel
